Spirit Airlines Adds and Cancels Routes in Summer Schedule Update

Update March 2, 2024: I previously reported Spirit would add regular service from Louisville to Dallas, Miami, and Newark. This is no longer the case as Spirit has updated its schedule so that they only operate two times for the Kentucky Derby.

Spirit Airlines is modifying its schedule for this summer, which includes various route additions and cancelations.

These lists are based on what I have found so far by examining Spirit’s updated schedule (unless specified otherwise).

New and Returning Routes:

  • Houston (IAH) to San Diego (SAN) starting May 8

  • Houston (IAH) to Charlotte (CLT) starting June 5

  • Columbus (CMH) to Myrtle Beach (MYR) starting May 9

  • Indianapolis (IND) to Myrtle Beach (MYR) starting May 9

  • Boston (BOS) to Newark (EWR) starting May 8

  • New York (LGA) to Columbus (CMH) starting May 8

  • New York (LGA) to Pittsburgh (PIT) starting May 8*

  • Baltimore (BWI) to Boston (BOS) starting May 8*

  • Baltimore (BWI) to San Diego (SAN) starting May 9*

  • Baltimore (BWI) to Portland (PDX) starting May 8*

  • Baltimore (BWI) to New Orleans (MSY) starting May 9*

* Denotes route already announced by PIT/BWI Airport respectively

Additionally, as reported by Enilria, Spirit will add San Juan (SJU) to both Houston (IAH) and New Orleans (MSY).

Spirit’s Boston to Newark route, which was last flew in 2021, is a notable re-entry into a major market. If Newark is included as a New York City Area airport, there are approximately 50 daily flights between Boston and New York City Area airports (JFK, LGA, EWR). Spirit will be the only ultra low-cost carrier providing service between Boston and New York City with its twice-daily service.

Route Cancelations:

Spirit Airlines has just canceled a dozen routes for this summer. This comes as the airline recently postponed service to Tulum, Mexico (TQO) and suspended Manchester, New Hampshire (MHT).

These additional route cuts include those that are currently operating and will soon end or were slated to resume this summer but have now been removed:

  • Raleigh/Durham (RDU) to Orlando (MCO)

  • Memphis (MEM) to Los Angeles (LAX)

  • Boston (BOS) to Las Vegas (LAS)

  • Boston (BOS) to Tampa (TPA)

  • Boston (BOS) to Miami (MIA)

  • Boston (BOS) to Fort Myers (RSW)

  • Cleveland (CLE) to Las Vegas (LAS)

  • Cleveland (CLE) to Miami (MIA)

  • Cleveland (CLE) to Atlanta (ATL)

  • Atlanta (ATL) to Fort Myers (RSW)

  • Detroit (DTW) to Miami (MIA)

  • Dallas (DFW) to Oakland (OAK)

Given the volatile nature of ultra low-cost carriers, it’s certainly possible for these routes to eventually return in the future. Alongside these route additions and cancelations, Spirit has modified its overall summer schedule, which sees frequency changes for numerous routes.
