Avelo Airlines to Announce Wilmington, Delaware Base and Five New Routes

It’s official—2021 startup Avelo Airlines is now the only airline offering regular passenger flights from Delaware.

As I first reported last month, Avelo had requested to begin flying to Wilmington’s New Castle Airport (ILG) in Delaware. Today, the airline will officially announce its entrance to Wilmington, Delaware with flights commencing next year.

Specifically, Avelo will be announcing five destinations in Florida from Wilmington (ILG):

  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) | Begins February 2 with two weekly flights

  • Fort Myers (RSW) | Begins February 3 with two weekly flights

  • Orlando (MCO) | Begins February 1 with three weekly flights

  • Tampa (TPA) | Begins February 2 with two weekly flights

  • West Palm Beach (PBI) | Begins February 4 with two weekly flights

Notably, Avelo will establish a base at Wilmington Airport starting with one Boeing 737-700 aircraft. The inaugural flight to Orlando on February 1 is a ceremonial event before Avelo’s regular service commences the following day.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority, the agency directing Wilmington’s New Castle Airport, has entered a comprehensive business arrangement with Avelo. The airline is eligible for incentives such as marketing and waived fees to support its new operations.

In late 2021, Avelo became the only airline to serve New Haven, Connecticut (HVN) following American Airlines’ departure. Avelo established a base at the airport and rapidly expanded its New Haven network from four Florida destinations to 14 cities in the eastern half of the United States. Now Avelo could replicate this strategy in Delaware.

All 50 U.S. states once again have regular passenger flights with the addition of Avelo’s new service. Frontier Airlines previously operated flights to Wilmington, Delaware until June 2022. The restoration of air service through Avelo is a major achievement for the airport and state.
